T e most amazing finds, though, are the
people and animals. T eir bodies rotted and leſt hollow spaces in the rock. T e scientists fill these holes with plaster. When the plaster hardens, they can see what the people and pets of Pompeii looked like in their final moments. Today, as you visit Pompeii’s ruins, the
statues help you imagine that time of terror. You also see Mt. Vesuvius. It still looms over the area. T e volcano hasn’t erupted in a century. You keep your eye on it, anyway, just in case.
