MOVING ON UP Training underpins better site maintenance

Severn Trent Water (STW) has taken a more proactive approach to maintaining treatment

assets

its wastewater by

engaging

Hydro International to train plant operatives on its Dynasand filter units.

Hydro training specialist Lorne Martin explains: “Training may not be the most original idea, or the latest

innovation, but we know

it works. A thorough review of operators’ knowledge of a particular piece of equipment can reap dividends. It could even avoid a plant failure, or, worse still, a breach of discharge consents.

“If plant is operating well, availability will improve and power consumption could be reduced. There will be less time and cost wasted in equipment downtime. Squeezing the best-possible performance out of wastewater assets is becoming increasingly important to water utilities as they start to consider the challenges of AMP 6.”

Building on its existing service contract, Hydro developed a bespoke training package for STW, training 98 operators over a three-month period to build their knowledge of DynaSand filters. After the training the operator feedback suggested those with a ‘good’ level of knowledge had increased from 22% to 74%. The training underpinned a major reorganisation of STW’s site operations according to catchment. Andrew Seed, assistant contracts manager at STW said, “By increasing the operators’ skill levels, we were able to identify better ways to run the plant. Feedback from all those that completed the course was extremely positive.

“Operators are a now a lot more confident about their knowledge of the equipment and that gives confidence to us, too, that our sites are operating effectively.”

He concluded, “Over time, the effectiveness of the approach can be seen to pay dividends.”

Appointments

Consultancy BMT WBM, a subsidiary of BMT Group, has appointed Matthew Roberts to lead a new flooding and environmental modelling team based in London. Previously at Capita Symonds, Roberts has provided technical expertise on numerous projects.

In response to a recent surge in sales of automated discrete chemistry analysers and segmented flow analysers, Seal Analytical has announced the appointment of Sadie Vick to the position of technical support chemist, based in the UK.

PE pipe fittings manufacturer, Plasson UK, has appointed Gordon Noble as area sales manager for Scotland and Ireland. He joins from Fusion and is tasked with enhancing customer support and increasing sales in the countries.

A new position of solutions sales engineer at actuation specialist Auma UK has been filled by Mark Goodson. Moving from Samson Controls, Goodson will focus on providing tailored actuation solutions.

PRODUCTS AND PROCESSES

Manufacturer supports water level event Monitoring equipment manufacturer OTT Hydrometry featured a wide range of equipment on its stand at a national drainage event at Wisbech in July. The company’s Pluvio raingauge, radio and GSM telemetry, web-enabled dataloggers, water flow meters and water level sensors were all on display at the event organised by the Association

of Drainage Authorities. Visitors also saw the latest remote monitoring systems for surface and ground- water. www.ott-hydrometry.co.uk

BSS adds to TMV range

Pipeline distributor BSS Industrial has launched a new range of thermostatic mixing valves (TMV) as part of its high quality Boss range. TMVs provide a solution to scalding by mixing hot water (stored at a temperature high enough to kill bacteria) with cold - ensuring constant and safe outlet temperatures. The combined Bossmix 2/3 range can be installed on wash basins, showers and bidets, as well as high pressure baths. www.bssindustrial.co.uk

Designing busbar system made easier Enclosure suppplier Rittal’s RiLine60 busbar system provides a cost effective solution for power distribution within control cabinets. To reduce design and installation time, the company‘s RPE design software can create

a parts list for a distribution system. It can also produce a detailed CAD design showing the busbar system inside enclosures.

VSD cabinets made for hire Control and automation specialist SoftStart UK has built a fleet of variable speed drive (VSD) control cabinets that it is making available for hire. The move is, in part, to

address a growing need from the water industry following major flood incidents that put pressure on pumping stations. Managing director Stuart Harvey said, “With our weather patterns looking to become increasing volatile, we began to think that having some panels ready and waiting would be a good idea.”
