He has an extensive leadership re-
cord in state, national, and international medical organizations. Among them, he was a founding member of the Ameri- can Trauma Society, served as president of the American Association for the Sur- gery of Trauma, and is a board member of the Michael E. DeBakey International Surgical Society. In addition, he has served as a member of the TMA Council on Medical Education and EMS/Trauma Committee and as a Texas delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates. The awards program, launched
in 2012, has four recognition levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum), and eligibility requirements increase for each level. Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels are self-nominating. A committee of TMA member physicians selected Dr. Mattox as the sole Platinum level win- ner from among the eligible Gold level applications.

DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, received TMA’s highest Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine at TexMed 2013. “Academia exists to create new venues of information and knowledge so future generations can become masterful physicians,” Dr. Mattox said. This year’s TMA Ernest and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching, presented by then-TMA President Michael E.
