INTERCONNECT

Molex powers tomorrow’s innovations with vehicle technology built to last

Commercial vehicle applications, especially agricultural machinery, are becoming more intelligent, with increased wiring requirements and demands for hybrid technology. The average new vehicle today contains twice as many connectors as models produced only ten years ago. Molex has interconnect solutions that simplify electrical distribution, boost performance and reliability, and where required, reduce weight and packaging space.

The new generation SRC (Sealed Rectangular Connector) family from Molex offers a rugged, sealed, wire-to-panel (bulkhead) and wire-to-wire hybrid connection system designed for high circuit-count applications in harsh environments. The primary location for this system is as the firewall connector, situated between the cab and the engine, but SRCs can also replace existing circular connectors in various in-vehicle applications. The SRC system uses proven MX150™ terminals with current ratings up to 18.0A and MX150L™ terminals with current ratings up to 40.0A. Flexible standard or mixed power /signal options are available. The MX150™ and MX150L™ terminal systems provide cost savings by eliminating the need to purchase, handle and crimp individual wire seals. This proven terminal technology provides flexibility to increase circuit- count and allows for simple field repair and replacement of headers and connectors. SRCs feature an integral terminal position assurance (TPA) system to ensure that crimped terminal leads are locked into the housing. A new anti-scooping feature, consisting of plastic standoffs arranged with the TPA, prevents damage to the terminals when the header and connector are mated. This ruggedized system provides cost savings as preassembled connector housings, seals, the rear cover and the TPA are shipped in one piece. Accessories available include a conduit interface with cable exit variations. Tooling options include fine-adjust crimp press applicators for high-volume production and hand tools for low volume production and field repairs.

Other unique features of this hybrid system include an integral, two- way matte seal and interface seals, which allow the system to meet IP69K

sealing performance. A sliding latch with cam action allows single-handed blind mating and requires no screw action or tools to mate the assembly. Versatile and reliable, the SRC system can also be found in construction and mining equipment. It is also an ideal solution for marine equipment, search and navigation equipment, trains, and material handling equipment that are used in harsh environments. The MX150™ Unsealed connector system is a new Molex product line for mid-power harness applications up to 22.0A. Based on the legacy MX150™ 1.50mm standard, low-insertion-force terminals, the compact system achieves overall space savings of 37% over traditional USCAR 1.50mm connectors. Available in 2, 3, and 4 circuits, the MX150™ Unsealed connector system can be found in dry zone transportation applications including interior lighting consoles, electric seats, door locks and mirrors.

The design-to-cost approach that Molex applied during the development of the MX150™ Unsealed connector system helped realise this high-performance connector at a competitive cost. This was achieved through the innovative use of a TPA on the hinge, which helps minimise the number of components to produce and assemble. The hinged Terminal Positioning Assurance (TPA) device, which is moulded as part of the housing allows simple terminal insertion and secure terminal seating. The MX150™ Unsealed connector system’s enlarged push surface helps improve ergonomics, allowing for convenient, USCAR-25 compliant mating and unmating. Harness manufacturers can easily access the terminal latch directly, once the TPA hinge is opened, for quick reworking or field-repairs. In addition, since standard MX150™ field-service tools are employed, additional tooling charges are eliminated. For more information contact avnet-abacus.eu/molex
