MORE London Lighting Design: Equation Design

What does the future hold?

We talk to Charlie Wadsworth, Commercial Director at Light Projects Group about what he thinks the future of lighting might look like…..

Lighting and its effects have always been dynamic however, now and into the future, since the advent of LEDs and the extensive adoption of Electronics

within the industry it is increasingly becoming more so. Fixtures that are designed today may not have the necessary components available to maintain them in the future. From a UK manufacturer’s point of view, the whole production schedule to produce new fixtures is becoming much quicker and is greatly enhanced by the advent of new technology and Rapid Prototyping Facilities, such as 3D printing that are increasingly becoming available. Indeed, the whole of the manufacturing industry will be greatly affected by this rapidly emerging process as it

develops quickly over time in the same way the publishing industry has been by E-books and their (* , &')"-)#% +*%(  $, ', -)&, difficult times both for manufacturers )(#-

more and more manufacturers offer "Free" design to assist with their sales of lighting fittings, this can only have a negative effect on lighting specifiers in particular and the lighting world/architecture as a whole. If we’re not careful, these manufacturers run the risk of damaging that most special of art forms and imagination that mark lighting designers as true creatives with wonderful vision.

The cost of this to the industry is that organisations that have certain specialties are lost with the big sea of commercialisation and find it hard to keep their expertise available to their previous customers. The phrase ‘Jack of all trades and master of none’
