modified has led to its widespread use, it can corrode quite quickly, which means that it is unsuitable for exterior applications. So, if enclosures made from mild steel are to be used out- doors, then they will need to be treated first – which is not a particularly cost effective answer when compared with other potential solutions.
Stainless steel, meanwhile, has been a popular material for many years, with typical applications being in food man- ufacturing and processing, as well as in the pharmaceutical industry. Unlike mild steel, stainless steel is capable of withstanding aggressive environments, so it is ideal for external situations. But, while it is resistant to rust, depending on the grade of steel used and environ- mental conditions, tarnishing and
But, as with most types of material, it does have its limitations. For exam- ple, placing a reinforced polyester enclosure on a roof where it is exposed to direct sunlight would ordinarily be fine, until the sun sets and the atmos- phere cools down. In such situations, the panel builder will also need to consider the use of a heater inside the enclosure to prevent any condensation and subsequent problems.

corrosion can sometimes occur. Enclosures made from reinforced polyester have been specifically designed to cope with harsh environ- ments and conditions. This material is particularly suited to outdoor applica- tions, as it does not corrode in damp
protection against UV rays, so it will not discolour or weaken in exterior set- tings. Due to its strength, corrosion resistant properties and the fact it is an insulated material, reinforced poly- ester is becoming a major alternative and competitor to steel enclosures.
Making the right choice
Where enclosures are concerned, there is currently plenty of choice available. In these tough economic times, how- ever, where customers are increasingly demanding more for their money, panel builders would be advised to take the opportunity to seek the most cost effec- tive and suitable option. By considering the overall picture and requirements at the outset, this can be achieved. Customers will turn to their panel builder for the best advice and to benefit from their expertise but, in some cases, they may need reassur- ance that the choice is appropriate for their needs. Working closely with equipment manufacturers can pay dividends for panel builders looking to find the best solution.
