Writers, philosophers and political dissidents from across Europe are taking part in 80 debates during the upcoming Battle of Ideas in London, with key questions for the public sector taking centre stage.
The eighth Battle of Ideas takes place over the weekend of October 20-21 at the Barbican, with more than 400 speakers making their cases in front of over 2,000 ‘delegates’.
Speaking ahead of the festival, its director Claire Fox (pictured right) said: “The mere mention of Europe today can elicit a yawn; the bureaucratised EU hardly seems an inspiring home of intellectual life. Meanwhile, Brussels and the Eurozone are seen more as limiting freedom rather than championing it. In contrast to the land of technocracy, the Battle of Ideas aspires to create Europe anew.
“Following a series of weekend Battle satellite events in European cities throughout
October,
we have invited independent intellectuals from across the continent to gather in London to create a modern, pan-European public salon.
“The past year in politics has often been disheartening, with the optimism which greeted the Arab Spring in short supply in 2012 and even the famed British free press facing the chill of Leveson. Challenging times, however, require intellectuals to engage with difficult ideas in the public sphere rather than be cowed in toeing the line or retreating into bland consensus. Whether it is asking hard questions about how equality has come to mean all things to everyone; trying to understand how the US culture wars are influencing debates on abortion and gay marriage; taking a clear look at the state
of the modern UK (especially when the possibility of Scottish independence threatens that very term) or trying to grapple with how the latest scientific research informs the enduring debate over what makes us free, there is plenty to argue about and for.”
Debates topics include: ‘Urban hubris and the great inequality
debate’; ‘Blaming troubled families – licence to parent?’; ‘Forced marriage to faith schools – the politics of multiculturalism’; ‘Youth today: unemployed or unemployable?’; ‘Risk, regulation and red tape’; and ‘A crisis of compassion – who cares?’
