IT INNOVATION
can deliver UK broadband commitments today
Satellite
With Broadband Delivery UK calculating 8% of rural homes in the nation are still without access to broadband or only poor broadband speeds, the rapid development of satellite technology is well timed to help bridge the ‘digital divide’ argues Steve Petrie, regional director at Eutelsat.
A
lthough the Government has committed to the UK having the best broadband infrastructure in Europe, many rural areas are still struggling on the wrong side of the ‘digital divide’. But with the latest developments in satellite technology, ever-faster and more affordable broadband solutions are now available in the UK today.
Local authorities such as Devon and Somerset county councils and their Rural Connection project are already using a satellite broadband service called Tooway to connect over 1,000 of the most rural homes and business in their region to the internet.
Eutelsat Communications, which operates the service through its Skylogic affi liate, recently announced major improvements to its Tooway
satellite service, which will enhance the speed and affordability of consumer satellite broadband in the UK and more widely across Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.
Up to 18Mbps immediately for consumers, irrespective of location
The Tooway service delivered via Eutelsat’s KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite now offers download speeds of up to 18Mbps and upload speeds of up to 6Mbps, with volume allowances of up to 50 Gigabytes per month. The solution also offers ever more affordable, entry-level packages starting with download speeds of up to 2Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1Mbps.
The Tooway customer equipment comprises a 77cm satellite dish and a sleek modem, which
is connected to a PC or Mac via an Ethernet connection. Customers can select professional or self-installation.
The Tooway system can also be used for Voice over IP and IPTV.
With a dual-feed (Ku-Ka), Direct-to-Home reception of television channels from adjacent broadcast satellites is also possible. Tooway is delivered by Eutelsat’s KA-SAT High Throughput Satellite. With its total capacity of more than 70 Gbps, it has ushered in an era of competitively-priced, satellite-delivered services for broadcasters, businesses and consumers.
