A flash lights up the sea. Shaped like a bell, it dances through the


water. It has no bones. You can see right through it. It’s a jellyfish. Something very diff erent is half


a world away. It seems to hang in midair, but clings to a thread of silk. Fuzzy hairs cover its armored body. It’s a spider.


All in the Family A jellyfish and a spider are very


diff erent. Yet they have something in common. Both of them are invertebrates. An invertebrate doesn’t have a


backbone. Yet that isn’t a weakness. Invertebrates are survivors. Scientists classify 95 percent of

all animals as invertebrates. T ey split them into groups. Each group is based on the characteristics their bodies have. Let’s take a look at some. You’ll see how invertebrates are alike and diff erent.
