16% Joyless husks

Japanese games

During an audience Q&A session for an Indie Game: The Movie screening at GDC, telling a Japanese developer what he thinks about his nation’s games output: “Your games just suck.”

Back on Twitter, defending his position: “Jon Blow called Japanese games "joyless husks". I’m not seeing anybody form a lynch mob about that.”

Unleashing a chain of Tweets, explaining why context should be considered: “I regret what I said to that Japanese man. Or at least, how I said it. but this things being taken WAY out of context. Were you there? Nobody is reporting that I immediately apologised on the spot to the Japanese dev on that. That doesn’t make for a good headline.”

Returning to Twitter to share a personal revelation with his followers: “I AM THE GENIUS VOICE OF A GENERATION”

IT FIGURES : GDC’S RECORD YEAR

A record-breaking 22,500 industry professionals flooded into San Francisco for oneweek to attend the Game Developers Conference, its organisers have announced. The attendance for one of the world’s biggest games industry events grew by an extra 3,500 people from last year's 19,000 visitors; a rise of 17 per cent, making the 26th iteration of the show the most successful yet. Hundreds of companies and the industry’s top professionals took part in various talks and conferences throughout the five-day event. 300 exhibitors filled the noisy expo floor with their booths. Onesession, the 'Flash Forward' keynote, saw almost 100 main conference speakers take to the stage in one hour to deliver forty-five-second brief overviews of their sessions in front of thousands of attendees. Develop covered more than 90 stories from the event. “The GDC reflects the full spectrum of the game development community,” said GDC general manager Meggan Scavio. “The continued growth of the conference is a great indicator of a healthy and exciting industry.” GDC 2013 is set to take place from March 25th to 29th next year, and will see the event return to San Francisco and the Moscone Center.
