Thomas W. Krise was named presi- dent of Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash., effective in June. He succeeds Loren J. Anderson, who is departing after 20 years at the univer- sity. A retired Air Force officer, Krise has served as dean of the College of the Pacific at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif., since 2008. Krise, who has an Episcopal Church background, said he is delighted to be tapped “to guide the university into a vibrant future,” and that “the bonds to the Lutheran community as well as to the local and regional communities are a source of great strength.”
ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Han- son was the keynote speaker at a con- ference held at California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, on March 9. Hanson’s talk on vocation opened a two-day regional gather- ing of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education. CLU geology professor Linda Ritterbush; Sam Thomas, an assistant professor of religion; and two students also talked about how “outdoor class- rooms,” like the university’s garden project, help develop vocation.
With a $25 million bequest from the late businessman and scholar William S. Dietrich II, Thiel College, Green- ville, Pa., launched the Kenneth and Marianna Brown Dietrich Honors Program. Named for Dietrich’s par- ents, who were Thiel graduates, the reinvigorated honors program is one priority in Thiel’s strategic plan.
Gerald McDermott, Jordan-Trexler Professor of Religion at Roanoke College, Salem, Va., and Michael McClymond, an associate profes- sor at Saint Louis University, co- authored The Theology of Jonathan Edwards (Oxford University Press). At 45 chapters, it is seen as the most comprehensive treatment of the phi- losopher-theologian’s work.
