February, 2012 Morgan: Biocompatible Carbon Coatings
Stourport, Worcestershire, UK — Morgan Technical Ceramics (MTC) is now producing a range of superior Diamonex® diamond-like carbon (DLC) biocompatible coatings that are especially suitable for medical implants, including left ventricular assist device (LVAD) heart pumps and artificial joints. With excellent adhesion and wear resistance, the Diamonex coatings have significant- ly extended component life. The company’s range of opti-
mized DLC coatings provide a super- hard, low friction coating with proper- ties approaching those of natural dia- mond. Applied to both LVAD housing
and rotor elements, the coatings pro- vide a medical barrier and wear- resistant coating that lengthens the life of the device. In addition, the low coefficient-of-friction (0.03-0.25) also increases the mechanical efficiency by minimizing friction at startup and during operation. The coatings pro- vide excellent adhesion and wear- resistant protection for both artificial hip and knee replacements. The DLC coatings can be
applied to both flat surfaces and 3- dimensional parts, using either direct ion beam or radio frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition techniques. They provide
a high hardness of 15-30 gigapascals (GPa), which extends lifetime and prevents fretting and galling. The DLC coatings are also smooth and highly conformal, with typical coat- ing thicknesses of just 2 to 5µ, elimi- nating the need for subsequent machining to achieve fine tolerances. According to the company, the
Diamonex optimized DLC coatings are finely tuned for medical applica- tions. Customers using the medical DLC coatings are seeing significant improvements in LVAD heart pump devices, knee implants, and other artificial joints when compared to other available coatings.

QC Industries Intros Angled Conveyors
Cincinnati, OH — QC Industries has added another component to its popu- lar line of Automation Series Conveyors: AS40Z Angled Frame Conveyors. The new conveyors enable elevation changes that aren’t possible with a flat conveyor. The new convey- ors feature the same 1.95-in. (49.5mm) high rigid aluminum frame offered in other Automation Series Conveyors. Its design resists twisting, which is a leading cause of belt tracking issues in competing conveyors. The conveyors also incorporate
the company’s special Z-Track design to help make tracking simple. Optional V-Guide belts can assist in tracking, especially in hard-to-reach applications. Reduced torque require- ments for these conveyors allow the use of smaller motors than other angled frame conveyors, letting them fit into spaces other conveyors cannot. The conveyors are available in

three configurations for any elevat- ing or lowering application. The L is a horizontal to inclined configuration and the R is inclined to horizontal, while the Z is horizontal to inclined to horizontal. The three most popular angles — 30°, 45° and 60° — are available as standard, while others are available as special orders. They can carry loads up to 120
lbs. (54.5kilos) and move at speeds up to 200 FPM (61m/minute). Widths are available from 8 to 24-in. (203 to 610mm) and lengths up to 20-ft. (6.1m).
