Tony North, Director, Bingham Tool Hire, Croydon

You simply can’t afford to

miss the Show. You can take advantage of excellent deals on suppliers’ stands, and you get to see the all latest equipment. I read about new products in EHN, but you can see them in detail at the exhibition and literally get to grips with them. I also enjoy the social aspect of the event, catching up with other hirers and exchanging views.

I think it’s great that the Show is growing, with the addition of the upstairs ‘Top Tier’ above the existing hall offering more to see, and this is a really positive sign in the current business climate. I will drive up to the Ricoh Arena and stay overnight to ensure that I get the most out of my visit. Other hirers should also make the effort to attend, because it is definitely worth their while.

Guy Tomblin, Depot Manager, Bison Plant Hire, Cirencester

“ I am really

looking forward to the Show, because you can see the right people and do some good deals. It brings all the major hire industry suppliers together under one roof, making it easy to find out a lot in a short time.

Since last March, we have invested approximately £500,000 in new machinery for our fleet, including new mini excavators from 1 to 6 tonne, and we intend spending more on additional machines in the first half of this year. I’ll be interested in attachments that can be hired with our minis, such as trenchers, as well as compact skip-loading dumpers, which we don’t currently offer. Like many other hirers we are very busy at the moment, but it is vital to make the time to attend the exhibition because you can derive so much benefit from it.

Graham Clark, MD, Stag Tool Hire, Borehamwood

It’s been quite a number of years since I visited a hire industry exhibition, and I’ve not been to the Executive Hire Show before. I have been busy developing the business since I bought it five years ago, having worked here for 26 years. However, I do realise it’s more important than ever to keep abreast of new ideas and

different products that will help us gain more revenue. That’s the main reason why I’ll be attending, and I will be ready to place orders on equipment we can profitably add. I will go with an open mind, as there is nothing I specifically

need to replace in our fleet, but as we offer everything from a 3 tonne mini to a 1/2in drill bit, there will be plenty of interest.

Visiting the

Show will enable us to see new equipment for niche markets that can earn us money, and we will place orders if we can strike the right sort of deal on the day. It is obviously important for every hire business to analyse the return on investment from their fleets, and to explore new ideas. It is good to see more suppliers of compact plant amongst the exhibitors, and we will be looking at the latest mini excavators, dumpers and other machinery there. In fact, the demise of SED makes the Executive Hire Show more important than ever in this regard.

Charlie Ellis, MD, A1 Tool & Plant Hire, Walsall

I wasn’t able to attend the Show last year owing to staff shortages, but I have organised backup personnel to cover me this time round. While it’s good to make contact with companies and people you already know and deal with, it’s probably even more important to spend time looking for what’s available from new suppliers that you can offer your customers. We are generating good business from the DIY market at the moment, with homeowners wanting to tackle more projects themselves. I will be interested in finding new products for tackling dust generated by concrete cutting equipment and power tools. We find that, not only do items like these offer Health & Safety benefits, but they also keep the work area cleaner and reduce the time needed to clear up afterwards, which homeowners really appreciate. Seeing new products and talking to different people gives you a wider perspective, perhaps making you take a fresh look at your business, and that can only be a good thing. It’s a way of acquiring knowledge that can set you apart from the competition.

I always try to take other members of our team with me when I visit the Show, because it gives them an opportunity to learn more about industry suppliers. We offer everything from a mini digger to a dust sheet, so there are bound to be plenty of products that will be relevant to a company like us. Also, I have been looking at the

Show website and I am struck by the number of first time exhibitors that will be there. I have been in the industry for 30 years, but you can’t afford to be complacent.

There are always new products and ideas you need to be aware of. And a lot of suppliers have reduced the number of reps they have on the road - we certainly see fewer of them. You can get information from the internet, but there’s no substitute for seeing products first-hand and talking to people face to face.
