New Mastersizer 3000 measures the particle size of even friable dry powders
Equipped with the novel Aero dry dispersion unit, the new Mastersizer 3000 particle size analyzer from Malvern Instruments now extends dry measurement to the widest possible range of sample types. The design of the Aero reflects state-of-the-art dry powder
dispersion knowledge and enables users to measure materials from cement to coffee, cohesive minerals to fragile pharmaceuticals, from 0.1 micron up to 3.5 mm in the dry state. Rapid and efficient, this new dispersion unit is supported by the fastest data acquisition rates available. Dry measurements become stable more quickly, and even challenging samples with very wide size distributions are measured accurately.
Dry dispersion of powders is a fast, intuitively appealing and environmentally neutral (no requirement for the disposal of liquid dispersants) approach to sample preparation for laser diffraction particle sizing. However, its application to fragile, friable particles is constrained by the need to apply enough energy for dispersion without breaking or milling the sample. To accommodate this, Aero has been designed from the ground up, taking account of the latest dry powder dispersion theory. The modular dispersion venturi system means that the user can easily select the most appropriate
dispersion mechanism for their samples. The standard venturi supplied with the Aero is suitable for a very wide range of samples, dispersing even moderately cohesive materials while maintaining the integrity of fragile particles. An optional venturi, which disperses the sample with a direct impaction mechanism, can be used for more aggressive break up of agglomerates and highly cohesive materials, when measuring metal powders or cement for example.
Sensitive pressure control to within +/-0.1 bar across the range 0.1 to 4 bar, allows precise tailoring of energy input to meet diverse sample requirements. The smooth and efficient sample feed means you can rely on the measurements to be robust. There are different feed trays and hoppers to accommodate various sample sizes, while an enclosed cell ensures bias-free measurement and minimizes user exposure.
The very rapid (10 KHz) data acquisition rate of the Mastersizer 3000 delivers accurate measurement, even at fast sample feed rates. All the parameters controlling dry powder measurement – sample feed rate, dispersion and system cleaning – are fully controlled through the software via the system manager interface. Real-time feedback helps streamline method development and routine measurement alike.

Keeping everything in stock so you don’t have to
FDL Packaging Group seeks to provide a single packaging resource solution to meet all manner of requirements across its incredibly diverse client base, ranging from the delicate small specialist containers used in laboratories to large bottles and drums for the safe transportation and storage of all manner of substances including hazardous materials. In fact, FDL Packaging offers well over 1,000 different product lines from its four-acre Haydock site. The FDL Packaging service can accommodate direct full vehicle load deliveries, mixed full load deliveries and virtually any part load combination from stock. While, to ensure that all forward orders and ‘just in time’ requirements can be met, sufficient stock levels are constantly maintained
at the FDL Packaging site.
What this all means of course, when taking into account reduced warehousing, transport, processing and other associated administration costs, is that the FDL approach can help the average company to reduce its annual packaging bill by a remarkable 25%. While, just as importantly, removing the packaging imperative from the procurement department’s day-to-day workload can produce greater efficiencies elsewhere.
Operating to ISO 9001:2008 and BRC IOP food standard, FDL Packaging offers the highest standard of expertise in packaging and access to all current legislation. The company has developed a whole range of packaging solutions that meet stringent UN regulations for the safe storage of hazardous materials. With an extensive knowledge of the ‘Granular, Powder and Ingredients’ packaging industry, covering hazardous chemicals through to pharmaceutical powders and food-related ingredients, FDL Packaging is also a major packaging supplier to the international wire and cable industry as well as the agricultural, construction and extrusion sectors. 32 Bulk Solids Today Paper packaging
system sets new performance standard
A newly-launched compact single-ply paper void-fill system introduced by Pregis Protective Packaging Europe is set to establish a new performance standard for this category. The Geo-
Speed®
Quantum™, which delivers crumpled paper from
rollstock at speeds of between 1.2m and 3.8m per second, is being described as the most user-friendly paper system on the market. Pregis has undertaken in-depth research into the needs of current protective packaging (void-fill, block and brace) users in the design of the Geo-Speed® Quantum™. This highlighted significant complaints about downtime due to jams and paper roll changes on existing equipment. As a result, Pregis has developed a unique
floating-head design for the machine, which enables the fastest roll loading of any unit on the market. Pregis says rolls can be loaded in a matter of seconds. In addition, the system, which can easily be rotated, facilitates ergonomic operator loading. The Geo-Speed® Quantum™ has also been designed to eliminate paper jams, unlike competitive units whose jams are said to occur frequently and which can be tedious and time- consuming to correct, since typically operators have to remove covers or use tools to clear the jammed paper. For user-friendly operation the Geo- Speed® Quantum™ is lightweight and portable, yet durable enough to withstand the rigours of a warehouse environment. Once the unit is in position, the operator can make adjustments to suit his or her specific needs, including machine height, paper dispensing angles and roll repositioning to help reduce the overall footprint.
In addition, to enable companies to deliver an enhanced environmental profile, the machine uses kraft grade paper which is made from a percentage of recycled content. Crumpled paper is ideally suited as small space, void-fill and light cushioning for a wide variety of products, especially those that are loose or unboxed, or have sharp edges. Typical products and markets include mail order fulfilment, electronic components, automotive parts, housewares, lighting fixtures, industrial parts, medical and dental supplies, pharmaceuticals, and lawn and garden products.
