Eriez Sweep Away Hazardous Ferrous Metals

Eriez Magnetics Europe Ltd has helped one of the largest scrap processors in Britain with the problem of damaging pieces of scrap metal affecting the day to day running of their yard.

The simple addition of a Magnetic Sweeper to the tow bar of one of their vehicles solved their problem with its high strength magnetic field picking up and holding nails, wire, welding rod ends, bolts, ferrous chips and all kinds of potentially damaging tramp iron in one quick sweep. This fast, efficient and practical way to rid large areas of hazardous pieces of iron helps prevent costly tyre damage, reduce equipment downtime and eliminate many safety hazards. Eriez supply both Permanent Magnetic and Electromagnetic Sweepers. Both types offer a high speed and powerful solution to troublesome tramp metal with the Electromagnetic version having the feature of the accumulated debris being unloaded by simply turning the magnet off. The light weight permanent magnetic option is not capable of this but it does have the benefit of attracting metal without the requirement of a power source. Cleaning the permanent magnet is also easy as the non-magnetic housing serves

as a stripper pan for the magnet. Simply moving a lever raises the magnet inside the housing and allows the tramp iron to drop to the ground.

The easy to use sweepers can either be supplied to suspend from a forklift truck or can alternatively be offered as a trailing model with puncture proof tyres and a tow bar for quick attachment to the towing vehicle. All models of Eriez Magnetic Sweepers are ideal for “clean sweep” removal of any tramp iron from roads, airports, car parks, warehouses, yards, quarries, machine shops, factory isles and any other area where pieces

of iron can be hazardous. Miles Disbrey, Operations Manager at Eriez commented: “Tyres can be very expensive and the cost of replacing them over a year adds up to a significant amount. Investing in a Magnetic Sweeper will considerably reduce if not eradicate this amount completely. We already have one in operation at Eriez and it has already paying for itself.” For more information on Eriez Magnetic Sweepers or any other Eriez products please visit http://en-gb.eriez.com or alternatively email info@eriezeurope.co.uk

Chubb helps recycling yard crack down on rising metal thefts

Chubb Fire & Security has designed and installed a sophisticated CCTV surveillance and detection system at a metal recycling site to help prevent the theft of valuable non- ferrous metals. Chubb, a leading provider of electronic security and fire safety solutions for business and industry, is part of UTC Climate, Controls and Security Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX). Due to high commodity prices metal theft is afflicting numerous industries, with many property managers and landlords finding their buildings targeted, particularly in the rail, construction and telecoms industries. Inevitably

metal stockholders are being significantly affected. D J & P A Pennill, a metal recycling site in Market Drayton, Shropshire that processes steel and copper, found itself under pressure from the Police to better protect their premises or face the possibility of being forced out of business in the battle against organised metal crime.

After consultation with local Police officers, the solution offered by Chubb included a dual camera with infrared capability that also uses ANPR (Automatic Number-Plate Recognition) to help identify vehicles and drivers that enter the premises. Data is stored on a central

digital recording system, enabling both the site owner and the Police to quickly access and review footage in the event of an incident. Chubb has also installed a further five cameras: one to cover the metal weighing scales; a second that is mobile and can be moved depending on the requirements; and three others for general site surveillance. The cameras all have an infrared capability enabling them to operate 24/7. The site operator Dave Pennill also has a facility to view camera footage from his own home in the event of an alarm being triggered. Dave says that he has been entirely satisfied with the work carried out by Chubb, and by the professionalism exemplified by its staff: “The installation went very smoothly and since then, the equipment has been performing with equal success. Hopefully this bespoke system will prove to be the solution to our theft problems.”

Neil Geens, Sales Manager for Chubb Fire & Security, says that soaring levels of metal theft are inevitably hitting dealers particularly hard: “In some instances, thieves have even attempted to sell the same metal back to the yard that the materials were stolen from. “It is essential that dealers, and indeed all property managers whose buildings contain metal, protect their assets from this growing form of theft,” he says. “Investing in an effective security system will both deter thieves and also help apprehend those who remain undeterred.” www.chubb.co.uk
