STRONG OUTLOOK FOR IRELAND’S FDI – NIB


According to theNational IrishBankFDIReport, 2011 will be a strong year for Irish FDI, with UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Develop- ment) reporting that €2.5bn of greenfield foreign di- rect investment into the county was announced between January andApril. The report notes that this is already more than half the


total for 2010 and, if continued for the rest of the year, would equate to a 60pc increase for the year as a whole. “The continued strength of FDI flows into Ireland sig-


nals a clear positive,” said Dr Ronnie O’Toole, chief econ- omist,NIB. “Given this sign of medium-term strength,we are leaving our export forecasts for Ireland in 2012 unchanged.”


BOSTON SCIENTIFIC EXPANDING R&D CAPABILITIES IN CLONMEL


Medical device manufacturer Boston Scientific is to invest €26min research and develop- ment at its facility in Clonmel, CoTipperary. The investment, which is being


supported by IDAIreland,will en- able the company to expand its R&Dand technical capabilities re- garding the design of its next gen- eration cardiac rhythm management devices manufac- tured at the Clonmel facility. Brad Sorenson, vice-president


of operations for Boston Scien- tific, said the funding will benefit the company's cardiology, rhythm and vascular group by enhancing its ability to provide R&D, design andmanufacturing support for its medical device technologies.


CITRIX INCREASING WORKFORCE IN IRELAND


Citrix Systems Ireland is increasing its workforce by 50 to support its technical services business in the EMEA region. “As our customers embrace virtual and cloud com-


puting as an agile and cost effective way to deliver desktops and applications to employees, Citrix con- tinues to growacross EMEA,” said JohnKelly, senior director of customer technical support and education services in the EMEA for Citrix Systems Ireland. “This 50 jobs announcement is very welcome


news,” said Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland. “The expansion illustrates that Ireland is an increasingly attractive location for technical services due to the talented and highly skilled workforce.”


SANGART LOCATING EUROPEAN HQ IN CORK


Global biopharmaceutical company Sangart is building a newfacility in east Cork whichwill serve as its Euro- pean headquarters. The new Carrigtwohill facility


will also be the sales and manu- facturing base in Europe for the company’s MP40X and MP4CO therapies. Up to 120 will be employed at the facility. “The need for oxygen thera-


peutic agents such as MP4OX and MP4CO is a global one, and our manufacturing investment in Ireland is an important ele- ment of preparing for the potential future marketing of our therapies,” said the com- pany’s Cork-born, US-based chief executive Brian O’Callaghan.


MSD OPENS TWO NEWCORK FACILITIES


Global healthcare provider MSD is generating 70 jobswith the opening of two new facilities at its site in Brinny, Co Cork, representing a €28.6m in- vestment supported by IDA Ireland. The new Brinny Bioassay Centre of Expertise will focus on bioassays for


therapeutic protein products and will support other MSD sites. The Brinny Pneumococcal Vaccine Conjugation Facility will produce vaccine for clini- cal trials in immunisation against pneumococcal disease for paediatric use. The facilitywill have the capacity


to produce 100 million doses of pneu- mococcal conjugate vaccine a year. “The locating of these two facilities


at Brinny underlines the strategic im- portance of this site within the MSD global network,” said John Howell, general manager, MSD Brinny.
