Local Rules

By Ryan Gregg, Director of Education and Rules

Rule 33-8a permits the committee to adopt local rules that pertain to a specific competition, course

or hole. These rules are just as important as any of the original 34 and the player is responsible for knowing them. Some of the common local rules adopted are: Note to Rule 6-3, Relief for an Embedded Ball Through the Green, Stones in Bunkers, Aeration Holes, Protection of Young Trees, Obstructions Close to the Putting Green and Distance Measuring Devices. Please remember that local rules are not considered rules unless adopted by the committee. Players should never assume a local rule is in effect.

s RELIEF FOR AN EMBEDDED BALL THROUGH THE GREEN grants relief to

a player whose ball is embedded outside an area that is closely mown to fairway height or less. However, a player is not entitled to relief if the ball is embedded in sand. Note: Through the green is defined as all areas of the course except the teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played, and all hazards on the course.

STONES

IN BUNKERS may be treated as movable

obstructions (Rule 24-1) by adopting a local rule that allows a player to move the stone away from the ball. If the ball moves, there is no penalty as long as the ball is replaced.
