Moore. “I can disappear for a couple weeks at a time to show dogs without any problems.” As a caddie you never know

who will be your boss for the day; recent loops at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill have included former Pakistani President Musharraf, athletes Tom Brady, Cal Ripken Jr. and Mario Lemieux as well as ac- tor James Caan among other celebrities who frequent the resort. While the caddies devote their sweat to the famed links of Pebble and Spyglass, they have limited access to play the courses they spend so much of their lives working on. Based on seniority loopers can play once a year but many only get to experience Pebble with a club in their hands if someone more senior declines. What keeps him com-

ing back to Pebble is a love of golf—Moore has competed in various amateur events and once shot 62 at Rancho Canada East in Carmel Valley—and a love of golfers, or at least the chal- lenge of mastering their psyches. “Pebble’s a tough place because people build it up in their mind so much,” says Moore. “They’ve been dreaming about it and playing the round in their mind for months. Then they go out and make 7 on the first hole and they’re crushed. You have to work hard to reel them back in.” McEldowney is a pre-

cise personality who can talk eloquently about the grain on Pebble’s greens and many of the course’s other nuances, but he is most engaged by the inter- personal aspects of caddying. “People come from all over the world to play Pebble Beach,” he says. “My goal is to get them to play their best and get the most enjoyment they can out of their round. In how many other jobs do you get to help people live out their dreams?”
