PACIFIC COAST AMATEUR The 45th playing of the prestigious

PACIFIC COAST AMATEUR commences later this month at Martis Camp GC in Truckee. The invitation-only field will compete in an event created to focus attention in the western United States for possible Walker Cup Team selection. That impetus paid off in 2011 as several past competitors, including 2010 champion Andrew Putnam of University Place, Washington, were among 16 players invited by the USGA to an early practice session for the 2011 Walker Cup team. Putnam, a two-time All-American from Pepperdine, returns to the Pacific Coast Amateur to defend a title he won by four shots. The 72-hole stroke-play championship also includes a team tournament, with each of 15 participating regional golf associations selecting a three-man squad competing during the first two rounds for the Morse Cup. The trophy, donated by Samuel F. B. Morse, founder and developer of Pebble Beach Company, was earned by Pacific Northwest Golf Association team last year; the NCGA last captured the Morse Cup in 2002. The Tom Fazio-designed Martis Camp opened for play in 2008. The course can stretch to a back-breaking 7,707 yards, taking full advantage of its dramatic High Sierra setting.

favorite, five-time NCGA Player of the Year Randy Haag, who earned a spot in the quarterfinals for the 10th time and the second year in a row. Haag had earlier taken out medalist Philip Chian of Covina. Chian had posted an im- pressive 67-69 on the Lake and Ocean courses for a 6-under total to earn the #1 seed by three strokes.

For Patel, the champion-

ship not only propels him toward a stellar final collegiate season, it provided a necessary lesson to an aspiring professional career. “I’ve got a long way to go, but if I can hit my driver straight I can really compete. This golf course taught me that,” he said. “But knowing a lot of the names on that trophy and winning here at Olympic in the 100th championship. . .it’s a dream come true.” The North/South

Challenge, a two-day competition between the NCGA and SCGA, took place during stroke-play qualifying. The final results are based on the best five scores out of six for each of the teams for a two-day total score. The NCGA team reclaimed the Roger Lapham Trophy, bettering the SCGA’s 736 with a 724. It was the first time the NCGA has the trophy in its possession since 2008.
