Cedar Fair names new president Can you handle ‘it’?

Prior to opening, Jack Morey, executive vice-president of Morey's Piers in New Jersey, could be seen raising his arms in joy beneath his company's latest offering.

New for 2011 on Morey's Surfside Pier, North Wildwood, "it" is a KMG Afterburner that spins, swings and hurls riders 65ft (20m) into the air. The $1.5 million (€1m) attraction comes with a dazzling green and yellow light package. The pendulum ride also features a first-of-its-kind lap bar system designed in collaboration with the team from Morey's Piers to give riders greater freedom of movement. "It" combines a swinging motion up to 120 degrees and a rotating centre where gondolas seat a total of 24 passengers who are facing each other. “We’re thrilled to introduce ‘it’ to our ride roster,” says Morey. “It’s literally like getting an enormous new toy and we hope our guests will enjoy ‘it. Now that we've named this ride 'it,' our next ride can be 'that' followed by 'the other’.”

Stand-up coaster reopens

Named after the DC Comics’ superhero of the same name – currently starring in a new film – Green Lantern is a Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) stand-up coaster that reaches speeds of up to 63 mph. Now open at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, the ride formerly operated as Chang at the now defunct Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom.

Riders stand throughout the entire course of the ride, which begins with a 153ft climb toward the sky, followed by a 45-degree vertical drop before rocketing riders through five inversions, including a 121ft-tall loop, a 103ft dive loop, a 72ft inclined loop and twisted double corkscrews. The construction is the park’s 13th coaster and its fourth from B&M.

10 years of Toverland

The Dutch theme park Toverland celebrates its 10th anniversary over the weekend of June 3 and 4. What started life as an undercover attraction in the town of Sevenum has mushroomed into a hybrid indoor/outdoor attraction featuring an attractive mix of themed rides and attractions, including the Netherlands' tallest, fastest and longest wooden coaster (Troy).

Created by businessman Jean Gelissem and run by his sister Caroline Maessen, the park opened its doors for the first time on May 19, 2001, with a second hall added in 2004 when it also unveiled the world’s first motorbike coaster from Vekoma (Booster Bike). Over four million guests have visited since the park began, and it has won several awards including a Golden Pony and a Radar consumer award. To celebrate the anniversary, the first hall (Land van Toos) has been completely renovated with an Oriental theme. As well as “10 Magic Moments” (“Tover” is the Dutch word for Magic) promotion, the celebration weekend also featured a Wheel of Fortune game and firework finale.
