Know What’s Below Call 811 before you dig


Whether it is a dreamed up deck addi- tion or a landscaping masterpiece, summer weather is a great time for outdoor improve- ment plans to actually take place.


If your planned proj- ects include digging, like planting a tree or bringing in a backhoe for trench work, you will have to wait a few more days so the job can be done safely. Underground utilities, such as buried gas, water, and electric lines, can be a shovel thrust away from turning a summer project into a disaster. To find out where utility lines run on your property, dial 811 from anywhere in the country a few days prior to digging. Your call will be routed to a local “one call” center. Tell the operator where you are planning to dig and what type of work you will be doing, and affected local utilities will be notified. In a few days, a locator will arrive to designate the approximate


location of any underground lines, pipes, and cables with flags or marking paint so you’ll know what’s below. Then the safe digging can begin. Although many homeowners tackling do-it-yourself digging projects are aware of “Call Before You Dig” ser- vices, the majority do not take advantage of the service. A national survey showed that only 33 percent of homeown- ers called to have their lines marked before starting dig- ging projects, according to the Common Ground Alliance, a federally mandated group of underground utility and damage prevention industry professionals. Although light gardening typically does not call for deep digging, other seemingly simple tasks like planting shrubs or installing a new mailbox post can damage utility lines. A severed line can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm dig- gers, and potentially result in fines and repair costs. Never assume the location or depth of underground util- ity lines. There is no need: the 811 service is free, prevents the inconvenience of having utilities interrupted, and can help you avoid serious injury. New Bank-Draft Dates


Electronic payment options like automatic bank-draft can save members time and money by avoiding the use of checks, stamps and driving expenses.

LREC offers automatic bank-draft four times a month for members to have their electric bill drafted from their bank account. Automatic bank-draft payments are transferred directly from your checking or sav- ings account to LREC. We look forward to these new draft dates helping members who receive their paycheck or income at different times. All automatic draft dates are featured on our website at www.lrecok.coop, under “Member Services” or members may call our office to get more information on draft dates. Members will have the option of setting the date they want their monthly bill to be drafted. If a member is already participating in the automatic bank- draft program, you can ask to be switched to your preferred draft date. Automatic bank-draft can be set up by visit- ing one of our offices or calling our main of- fice to request a form. Members can also ap- ply online at www.lrecok.coop. Members will need to continue pay- ing their electric bill as normal until “BANK DRAFT” is printed on the bill.
