Elected: Michael K. Girlinghouse, 50, as bishop of the Arkansas- Oklahoma Synod, effective July 1. When: May 1, on the fifth ballot with 97 votes. Jean L. DeVoll-Donaldson, synod director for evangelical mission, received 31 votes. Bio: Pastor of University Lutheran Church and Student Center, Norman, Okla. Also served congregations in Wauwatosa, Wis., and Wayne, Neb., as well as campus ministries at Wayne State College and the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. Replaces: Floyd M. Schoenhals, who retired Feb. 1 for health reasons.


Elected: Don- ald P. Kreiss, 50, as bishop of the Southeast Mich- igan Synod, effective Aug. 1. When: May 14 on the fifth bal- lot, with 193 votes. Niklaus C. Schillack, spe- cial minister of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Lapeer, Mich., had 145 votes. Bio: Pastor of Antioch Lutheran Church, Farmington Hills, Mich.; King of Glory, Flushing, Mich. Replaces: Stephen G. Marsh, who resigned June 28, 2010.


Re-elected: Thomas A. Skrenes, 56, to a six-year term as bishop of the Northern Great Lakes Synod, May 15 on the fourth ballot, with 147 of 199 ballots.

Eastern North Dakota, May 14-15, Fargo, N.D. • Moved to increase annual con- gregational giving to ELCA World Hunger and to use resources high- lighted at the assembly as a stimulus for addressing the needs of a hungry, impoverished world. • Approved a resolution to prevent bullying and harassment. • Defeated a resolution seeking withdrawal of the proposed social statement on genetics, which will be considered by the 2011 Churchwide Assembly.


Northeastern Ohio, May 13-14, Akron, Ohio • Asked the ELCA to support the U.N. and also proclaim 2011 as the International Year of People of Afri- can Descent, and in so doing promote education, work to eradicate racism,


and safeguard and pray for the rights and work of human rights defenders who fight to end all forms of racism and discrimination domestically and internationally. • Encouraged con- gregations to participate in the ELCA Malaria Campaign.


Northwestern Minnesota, May 14-15, Moorhead, Minn. • Asked congrega- tions to provide direct budgetary support for Lutheran campus minis- tries at Bemidji State University and Minnesota State University, Moor- head. • Proclaimed July 10 as King James Bible Sunday in the synod to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the translation. • Called congrega- tions to look for “missional edges” and enter “into a time of prayerful discovery of their purpose in God’s mission within their unique con- text.” • Asked congregations to con- sider support for mission partners, including churches on the U.S.- Mexico border. • Asked the 2011 Churchwide Assembly to encour- age, support and publicize new ministry partnerships addressing the prevention of bullying, harassment and related forms of violence.


South Carolina, May 19-20, Greenville, S.C. • Sent voting members sporting blue T-shirts into the city to partici- pate in various experiences, such as “shopping as discipleship” and “I was a prisoner and you visited me.” • Defeated a proposition calling for the synod council to “renegotiate” its mission support of churchwide activ- ities from 41.5 percent to 33 percent of contributions from congregations to the synod. • Called on the church to speak and act to prevent bullying, harassment and related violence.
