larger with increased power and improved accommodation, although details are lacking. Bonn is scheduled for launch on 1 June. Upgrades
continue with the
Brandenburg (F123) class frigates receiving Phase 2 of their upgrade programme with improved anti-submarine capabilities through the addition of low-frequency towed array sonar and an upgraded bow sonar. They will also receive the Evolved
SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) or RIM-162 and Saab RBS-15 Mk III surface-to- surface missiles. Te Rheinmetall Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) decoy launching system has been ordered to equip the last Kulmbach (Type 333) and first Ensdorf (Type 352) minesweepers. Tere is no apparent progress on the
Braunschweig (K130) class corvettes which were withdrawn from service due to major faults in the gears and other areas.
Emden is one of eight Bremen class F-122 frigates.
The replacement K131 class appears to remain on the back burner with no funding immediately available. Monohull and Small Waterplane Area,
Twin Hull (SWATH) solutions are being considered and the ships will be armed with an Oto Melara 76mm gun, an
Oerlikon Contraves 35mm Millennium gun, four Saab RBS Mk3 surface-to-surface missiles and a RAM point-defence surface- to-air missile system. Te Navy wants six ships which, like the Braunschweigs will carry a NH90 helicopter, with the first-of- class being commissioned in 2020.WT
