this year. It is expected she will be followed by another five, although no orders have yet been placed.

Russian interest continues in minor

surface combatants and in August 2010 the Gorky Plant in Zelenodolsk laid its first keel for a Buyan (Project 21631) class of patrol boat. Te first three ships were built by Almaz but from RFS Grad Sviyazhsk they will be built at Zelenodolsk and assigned to the Caspian Flotilla

together with five planned sister ships. In addition to the Mistrals, the

Russian naval landing troops will benefit from a new generation of tank landing ships to replace the Alligator (Project 1171) class. Te RFS Vitse Admiral Ivan Gren is completing at the Yantar yard, Kaliningrad, and should be commissioned

Changes in command It is worth noting that there have been major changes in the command of the Russian Navy, and the navy staff may be moved out of Moscow to St Petersburg, although plans to do so in the immediate future have been postponed. But the current main command of the Russian Navy is expected to be reorganised as a much smaller department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, which are being more closely integrated. The Black Sea Fleet has been subordinated to the operational command of the new Southern Joint Strategic Command headquarters while the Pacific Fleet is part of the Eastern Joint Strategic Command Headquarters and the Baltic and Northern Fleets have joined the Western Joint Strategic Command headquarters.
