Time-Lapse Seismic Data. Repeat 3D seismic surveys, also known as time-lapse or 4D surveys, help asset teams identify reservoir-fluid types and map fluid saturations and pres- sure. Advanced systems acquire calibrated, repeatable seismic mea- surements that reveal actual changes in reservoirs rather than artifacts of survey-acquisition differences. By understanding reservoir changes, asset teams are better able to man- age production.

Water Management. Mature oil fields generally have one thing in common, produced water, and lots of it. Estimates indicate that in the USA, on average, 10 barrels of water are produced with every barrel of oil. Globally, billions of barrels of pro- duced water make their way to the surface each year. In this article, we discuss modern water-management techniques for mature fields and the efforts operators are making to reuse produced water, effectively turning waste to resource.

Production Rehabilitation. A long-term alliance between Eni and Schlumberger has contributed to a production increase of more than sevenfold from the Dación concession in Venezuela. Since 1998, an Integrated Project Management team has coordinated well-construc- tion and well-intervention services under a performance-based, risk- reward contract. We review the status of production enhancement efforts, including the drilling of new infill and replacement wells and remedial work on existing wells for this 20-year project.

Well Test Analysis: The Use of

Advanced Interpretation Models Dominique Bourdet Elsevier Science Inc. P.O. Box 945 Madison Square Station New York, New York 10159 USA 2002. 426 pages. $140.00 ISBN 0-444-50968-2

This book discusses the various inter- pretation techniques proposed by well- test interpretation computer programs in addition to the advantages and limi- tations of the different approaches. Model hypotheses and the influence of different parameters are presented along with application to field measure- ments. Also included are recent complex interpretation models that combine different types of well and reservoir configurations.

Contents: • Principles of Transient Testing • The Analysis Methods • Wellbore Conditions

• Effect of Reservoir Heterogeneities on Well Responses

• Effect of Reservoir Boundaries on Well Responses

• Multiple Well Testing • Application to Gas Reservoirs

• Application to Multiphase Reservoirs

• Special Tests

• Practical Aspects of Well Test Interpretation

• Appendixes, References, Index

With this book, well test interpre- tation engineers will not only find answers to the different questions encountered in the course of analysis, but also gain a better understanding of the physical process involved, and the meaning and limitations of the results.

A Short History of Nearly

Everything Bill Bryson Broadway Books, a Division of Random House Inc. 1745 Broadway New York, New York 10019 USA 2003. 528 pages. $27.50 ISBN 0-7679-0817-1

This book by popular writer Bill Bryson summarizes everything that has hap- pened from the time of the Big Bang to the present. Making science less intimi- dating is Bryson’s essential goal as he explores an atom, a cell, light, the age and fate of the Earth and the origin of human beings. His organization is historical and includes anecdotes about the pioneers of physics, chemistry, geology, biology, evolution, paleontology and cosmology.

Contents: • Lost in the Cosmos • The Size of the Earth • A New Age Dawns • Dangerous Planet • Life Itself • The Road to Us • Notes, Bibliography, Index

…[Bryson] is modest about his

learning, but he has shown that sci- ence…is accessible to an outsider equipped with a decent measure of curiosity and some staying power. His is a bravura performance, which will give much pleasure, and I salute it.

The Dynamic Structure of the Deep Earth: An

Interdisciplinary Approach Shun-ichiro Karato Princeton University Press 41 William Street Princeton, New Jersey 08540 USA 2003. 253 pages. $35.00 ISBN 0-691-09511-6

The study of the structure and dynamics of Earth’s deep interior is one of the most active frontiers of Earth sciences. In a summary of current research in this field, the author integrates the atomic-level description of Earth materials with global-scale modeling and observations on mantle and core dynamics. He depicts an Earth whose deep interior is as active as its surface, and whose processes often control surface dynamics.

Contents:

• The Structure of Earth and Its Constituents

• Water, Partial Melting, and the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere

• Seismic Tomography and Mantle Convection

• Mantle Circulation and Properties of Earth Materials

• The Origin of Deep Earthquakes

• The Core: Structure, Evolution, Dynamics, and Planetary Perspectives

• References, Index

Karato’s book succeeds better than any other I have read in telling a story about what makes the deep Earth so interesting and so challeng- ing to study. This may be a good enough reason for nonspecialists to read the book, even given the caveats about uneven coverage and perspec- tive. [The book] is also excellent supplemental reading for any student or researcher in the field.
