city, you may need to make adjustments in your preparation. Most dance instructors are quite familiar with the time and financial constraints of a betrothed couple and can make personalized recommendations to make the most of the time and money you can devote to your first dance.

Wedding Dance Instruction Once you have chosen a song, your instructor’s focus should be on helping you dance together well as a couple. Every couple has an individual style, and your first dance should reflect your special talents. When a couple comes to our studio, we work closely with them to match the dance to their individual style, and to help them look their very best on the dance floor. Usually, our first lesson with a new student couple at Terry Dean’s Ballroom Dance Studio will concentrate on getting a good lead-and-follow communication pattern started, in addition to teaching the basic steps of the dance. You and your instructor will choreograph a routine that will likely consist of the basic steps of your chosen dance, with a few “picture moves” that you can use to add a bit of romantic sparkle. The goal here should be to make the dance as comfortable and natural for you as possible, but also to make it a warm and memorable experience for you and for your guests. Our choreography is always geared to giving you that level of comfort with dancing. When selecting a dance instructor to help you prepare for your wedding, you should look for someone who can share your vision of this special dance and help you realize your dream. If you don’t have a vision, find an experienced, committed instructor who can inspire you.

Learning to Dance as a Couple The lucky couple that enjoys learning to dance together may have found a hobby to pursue together. Dance instruction could be a very good investment in the rest of your marriage, not just an expense of your wedding reception.

Patience is a virtue when you are learning how to dance as a couple! Often, one partner will learn a bit faster or start out knowing a bit more than the other. Many times, the man seems to be learning the steps more slowly, but in reality, he has a lot to think about during the lesson. He has to learn the steps, decide what he wants to do next, and then remember how to initiate the lead – all without getting overwhelmed. The lady must also learn the steps, but then wait patiently for the gentleman to lead them.

The most successful students allow the instructor to provide necessary feedback – don’t worry, your partner already knows “that wasn’t quite right” before you say so! A skillful instructor should be able to tactfully diagnose the issue and provide gentle guidance to both partners.
