Looking back, striding forward

I

t’s been another busy year for the Catalogue Exchange, with a number of exciting developments and new member companies joining us. As we prepare to enter the new year, in this, the last issue of Catalogue e-business

of 2010, we’re taking a look back at what we’ve been up over the past twelve months and looking ahead to the plans we have in the pipeline for 2011. Whether you’re already a member, you’re considering joining, or you simply want to find out what we’re all about, read on... One of the most exciting developments

within CatEx this year has been the launch of the Postal Procurement Initiative. This exclusive group-buying scheme has been up and running for seven months now and is already collectively saving CatEx members hundreds of thousands of pounds a year on postage. It works by combining the bulk-mail volume of member companies and giving them access to specially negotiated group discount rates that are lower than they could receive on their own. So far, 22 direct retailers have signed up to the project

and more are in the pipeline. Since its launch, 58 mailing campaigns have passed through the scheme and more than 3.2 million items have already been mailed. This isn’t the only deal available to members—we have many others up and running too. Over the coming months we’ll also be negotiating a number of new offers and discounts for our members to use. Membership of CatEx is continuing to

grow with both client-side and supplier-side companies signing up all the time to take advantage of the benefits on offer. A new range of sponsorship packages has also just been unveiled, offering an improved and extended selection of incentives for those wishing to take their support of the organisation a step further.

Changes at the top As we enter our seventh year, CatEx is

preparing for the next phase of development with a new advisory board line-up at the helm. The recent elections have seen us welcome three new members to the board: Paul Cunningham, managing director of children’s furniture catalogue Aspace; Mark Wilby, operations director at nautical gifts merchant Nauticalia, and John Ellis, sales director at mailing house Sunline Direct Mail. They’ll join reelected members Dara O’Malley, incumbent CatEx chairman and managing director of homewares catalogue House of Bath; Graham Winn of Flowercard, Anne Walker of International Dance Supplies, Tony Adams of TA Design, Matthew Pepper of Abacus, and Wayne Parrott of Royal Mail. The other members of the board are CatEx president Nigel Swabey of Scotts & Co; deputy chairman Tim Curtis of Lands’ End; Martin Harvey of Marshalls Garden Catalogues, and

Heather Gorringe of Wiggly Wigglers. Together the board will agree on policy and the ongoing and future development of the trade body. Another major highlight of the year has

been ECMOD2010, and we’ve just returned from this year’s show where many of our members were either exhibiting or speaking at the conference. We were also delighted to join forces with ECMOD to host the Supplier of the Year Awards, recognising the outstanding contribution our supplier organisations bring to the sector. Congratulations must go to all the winners, and in particular our member companies who scooped awards! Our events continue to prove highly popular

with our members—2010 has certainly seen some of our best yet. We’ll be holding a number of regional and national training days, conferences and seminars over the coming year, starting with our New Year networking day at Twickenham on Thursday, 3rd February. This event will feature trading reviews of 2010, as well as expert advice and insights for the year ahead. Also, following the success of the Annual Summit in 2010, we will be returning to Kensington Town Hall once again on Tuesday, 7th June 2011. Overall it’s been a great year for CatEx

and we’re looking forward to building on that success in 2011. With full client-side membership still costing from just £245 a year, and associate fees priced at £695 a year, there’s never been a better time to join.
