Court Denies Class Certification In Store Managers’ Misclassification Case


LOS ANGELES—A California Superior Court Aug. 26 denied class certification in a lawsuit brought by three current and former Smart & Final Stores LLC store managers, who alleged that the specialty grocery chain misclassified more than 300 managers as exempt from overtime provisions of California labor law (Romero v. Smart& Final Stores LLC, Cal. Super. Ct., No. BC393678, 8/26/10).

Ninth Circuit Orders Raytheon to Restore No-Cost Benefits of Retirees Under Age 65


Raytheon Co. must restore the no-cost health insurance benefits it promised to provide to a number of union-represented employees who retired under pre-2004 collective-bargaining agreements, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled Sept. 7 (Alday v. Raytheon Co., 9th Cir., No. 08-16984, 9/7/10).

CA Labor Commissioner Wins Historic Settlement for Better Treatment of Janitors


Los Angeles – State Labor Commissioner Angela Bradstreet won an historic settlement in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Monday with a janitorial service company that mandates the company follow new rules when it comes to its employees and subcontractors.
