workers and government enforcement agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

The private sector is not alone in having to manage through the persistently challenging economic environment. Employers Group has written, in depth, about the fact that the public sector, specifically state and local governments, are also dealing with crippling budget shortfalls with few choices for closing their budget deficits. Unfortunately, for business, the limited choices for government solutions are typically directed at business. In turn, those very “fixes” (e.g. enhanced compliance and government audits, new regulations, new fees and/or enhanced business taxes) that reduce government budget deficits, directly impact business’s ability to grow and expand the economy.

As we enter into the home-stretch for the 2010 elections, it is vitally important that existing elected officials and those new candidates seeking office are cognizant of the direct cause and effect relationship between government legislative, regulatory and fiscal policies and business job creation, retention and growth. Given the current economic environment, it would be extremely foolhardy for government to ignore the debilitating impacts of increased regulation, higher business taxes, and other burdensome requirements. Employers Group challenges elected officials and candidates to assess and to evaluate whether their proposed policies and initiatives actually promotes and provides for job creation, business expansion, and the ability to reinvest in the business and workforce.
