B8 RICH CRONIN, 36
Leader of LFO pop trio penned catchy perennial hit ‘Summer Girls’
by T. Rees Shapiro
Rich Cronin, 36, the lead mem- ber and songwriter of the pop trio LFO, whose catchy tune “Sum- mer Girls” was the top-selling U.S. single for six weeks in sum- mer 1999, died of complications of leukemia Sept. 8 at a hospital in Boston. Mr. Cronin, who stood 6-foot-3 and had bleach-tipped blond hair, wrote “Summer Girls” in his parents’ basement in Kingston, Mass., while reminiscing about a fleeting romance he’d had as a teenager on the beaches of Cape Cod.
But for millions of teens and
20-somethings who first heard the song on the radio, the tune became a popular seasonal an- them with a long shelf life. This year, Billboard magazine named it one of the top 30 “summer” songs of all time.
Recorded in 45 minutes at a
friend’s house with a start-up stu- dio kit, the song featured Mr. Cro- nin rapping non sequiturs into a sequence that he later called “a lyrical yearbook to my genera- tion.” A sample: “New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits, Chi- nese food makes me sick, and I think it’s fly when girls stop by for the summer, for the summer.” Over an infectious rhythmic pulse, Mr. Cronin’s syrupy rap in- cluded references to the Boston Celtics, the “Home Alone” mov- ies, Pez candy, Paul Revere, “Billy” Shakespeare’s sonnets and the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing company. Initially, Mr. Cronin said, the song was just a series of inside jokes he had written for his band- mates. How “Summer Girls” be- came popular on the radio, he said, was completely by chance. A programming director at
Washington Top 40 station WWZZ (104.1 FM), Dale O’Brien, received an unmixed copy of the song. When he listened to it a few days later, he told Billboard magazine, he recognized it as an instant hit. “I said, ‘Man, that is a record,’ ” O’Brien said. “It was kitschy, with that whole New Kids, Macaulay Culkin and Abercrombie and Fitch thing. I figured people would latch right on.”
One of those who did was a
definitely taken out the line about Chinese food if I had known that would happen.” Richard Burton Cronin was born Aug. 30, 1974, in Boston. He had a poster of the rapper Vanilla Ice on his bedroom wall and took trips to Manchester, N.H., to com- pete in freestyle competitions with other rappers, who dubbed him the Lyte Funky One, which was the origin of his band’s name. In the late 1990s, he was work- ing in a Blockbuster video store and attending Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts when, on a lark, he and a friend drove to Orlando to introduce themselves to Lou Pearlman, the producer of ’N Sync and the Back- street Boys. When Mr. Cronin arrived at
Pearlman’s home, he knocked on the door and made his pitch. The producer instantly agreed to take the fledgling group under his wing. The trio’s final lineup of Mr. Cronin, Brad Fischetti and Devin Lima performed as an opening act for LL Cool J and the Back- street Boys and went on a world tour. (One of the band’s backup dancers was Kevin Federline, fu- ture ex-husband of Britney Spears.) Mr. Cronin wrote the group’s

member of a production team for a New York station, WHTZ, who one day had been driving through Washington and was lis- tening to WWZZ when “Summer Girls” came on. He raved about the song to his bosses, who began to play it day and night after hun- dreds of requests. “It’s the kind of song where the hook is so in-your-face that even if you don’t like it, you find your- self singing it, kind of like a nurs-
ery rhyme,” Paul Bryant of WHTZ told Billboard. “Plus, it really hits all of these pop-culture hot but- tons.” The song launched LFO into stardom, and “Summer Girls” hit No. 3 on the Billboard 100 and stayed on the charts for more than a dozen weeks. “I never thought anyone be-
sides my close friends would ever hear it,” Mr. Cronin told the Bos- ton Globe in 2005. “I would have
other Top 10 Billboard hit, “Girl on TV,” for his then-girlfriend, ac- tress Jennifer Love Hewitt, whose movies he watched during his job at Blockbuster. LFO broke up in 2002 and at- tempted a small reunion tour in recent years, with little success. With other adult singers from boy bands, Mr. Cronin appeared in the VH1 reality show “Mission: Man Band,” an experience he lat- er called “septic” to his credibil- ity. Mr. Cronin seemed to accept that his moment in the spotlight was mostly behind him. “There was a time when I could
get any girl I wanted,” he told the Boston Herald in 2008. “But I knew it was a false reality. I never felt ‘this is what I deserve.’ I was aware I was a very lucky guy. I knew it was gonna be short-lived and I should enjoy it while I could.” Survivors include his parents, Richard H. Cronin and Doris- Lynne Cronin, of Kingston; a brother; and a sister.
