CLARK

During that time she met and fell in love with Colonel Clark, an Army press liaison officer. After the war, Ken accepted a position at the Motion Picture Association of America in Washington, DC, and they moved to Alexandria. There they raised three sons. Violet remained in the same house on Timber Branch Drive until a few months before she died. Ken passed away in 1990.

Fulfilling a life-long wish to obtain a college degree, Violet received a BA from George Washington University in 1957 and taught biology at George Mason High School in Falls Church, Virginia for ten years. She was passionate about science and the vast perspective on the earth and its history that biology afforded her. She revered the ancient Greek philosophers and was deeply interested in evolution.

VIOLET ANDINA CLARK

Died peacefully at Envoy of Alexandria on April 16, following an earlier fall at her home. Born Violet Stevenson in Hibbing, Minnesota on January 22, 1911, she had resided in Alexandria ever since her marriage to KennethW. Clark in 1946. Violet spent her early childhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. At age twelve, she moved with her parents, Fred and Alma Bauer, and her sister Geri, to San Francisco. She was graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1929 and began work as an administrative assistant in a San Francisco insurance firm.

She moved briefly to Miami, Florida to work at the Miami Tribune, and in 1936 sailed on the Queen Mary to cover the coronation of George VI. Returning to San Francisco, Violet witnessed the internment of Japanese Americans in 1942 and assisted ACLU lawyer Ernest Besig in efforts to thwart their removal. In 1943, she enlisted in the Army as an administrative aide, achieving the rank of lieutenant, and was stationed in North Africa and Italy.

After her retirement, Violet was active in the Little Theater of Alexandria. She loved acting. She was also a docent for many years at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. She leaves four granddaughters, Joan Le and her husband Andy of San Francisco, Kate Clark of Boulder, CO, Amanda Clark of Norman, OK, and Ariana Clark of Bainbridge Island,WA.

Violet had a smile for everyone and bright blue eyes until the last days of her very long life. She was fond of quoting Tennyson to express her grief at the loss of her beloved Kenneth. ‘’O for the touch of a vanished hand / And the sound of a voice that is still.” That line is now ours.
