Theodore H. ‘Ted’ Focht

LAWYER

Theodore H. “Ted” Focht, 75, a

lawyer who worked with Congress to create an insurance program to protect investors, died April 22 at a care center in New Port Richey, Fla. He had Alzheimer’s disease. Mr. Focht’s work as a special counsel culminated in the creation of the Securities Investor Protec- tion Corp., which insures investors against brokerage firm failures. He later became general counsel and president of the corporation. He taught occasional law courses at American University. In 1995, Mr. Focht moved to Flor- ida, where he worked for the state comptroller and consulted for the World Bank. Theodore Harold Focht was born in Reading, Pa. He received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Franklin and Marshall Col- lege in Lancaster, Pa., in 1956 and a law degree from the College of Wil- liam and Mary in 1959. He taught legal writing and estate law at Co- lumbia University before working as a legal assistant with the Securi- ties and Exchange Commission. He taught for several years at the Uni- versity of Connecticut and moved to the Washington area in 1969. He enjoyed taking cruises with his wife. Survivors include his wife of 53

years, Joyce Gundy Focht of New Port Richey; two sons, David Focht of Palmyra, Va., and Eric Focht of Colorado Springs; and a grandson.

Harry V. Gelboin

CANCER RESEARCHER

Harry V. Gelboin, 80, a leading cancer researcher who was among the most-cited scientists from the 1960s through the 1980s, died of lymphoma April 13 at his home in Chevy Chase. Dr. Gelboin was chief of the mo-

lecular carcinogenesis laboratory at the National Cancer Institute from 1966 to 1999. He discovered the genetic basis for the process by which normal cells are trans- formed into cancer cells, known as chemical carcinogenesis, a discov- ery that was considered a major advance in the field. He and his NCI group produced monoclonal antibodies, which are laboratory-made molecules engi- neered to attach to specific defects in cancer cells and are widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for preclinical drug development. Dr. Gelboin published more than 430 scientific papers and was listed as among the 300 most-cited scientists worldwide between 1965 and 1978 and among the 500 most- cited scientists worldwide between 1973 and 1982. He edited or co- edited eight professional books and lectured widely. He retired in 2000 but remained

a scientist emeritus with the NCI’s metabolism laboratory. Harry Victor Gelboin was born

in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois. He received a master’s degree in biochemistry in 1956 and a doctorate in biochem- istry and oncology in 1958, both from the University of Wisconsin. He received several merit

awards from the Senior Scientific Service of the National Institutes of Health. He was the co-organizer and co-chairman of the 21st Prin- cess Takamatsu Cancer Research Fund Symposium in Tokyo in 1990, and he was a member of the Amer- ican Association for the Advance- ment of Science. Dr. Gelboin was a member of

Ohr Kodesh Congregation in Che- vy Chase and the Ohev Sholom synagogue in Washington and a past board member of the Mid- rasha Hebrew High School in Fair- fax County. He volunteered at local nursing homes, conducting ser- vices for Jewish patients. His marriage to Stella Gelboin ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Marlena Gelboin of Chevy Chase; two daughters from his first marriage, Michele Gelboin of San Diego and Lisa Gelboin of Toronto; two daughters from his second marriage, Sharon Gelboin-Katz of Silver Spring and Tamara Gelboin of Arlington County; a sister; and nine grandchildren.

Doris K. Deakin

Doris K. Deakin, 82, a freelance writer who contributed stories to The Washington Post, the New York Times and the Baltimore Sun, died April 21 at a nursing home in Warren, R.I. She had complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Deakin was a features re-

porter at the Washington Star in the 1950s and ’60s. Later, as a free- lancer, she wrote articles that in- cluded a profile of an Air Force string ensemble and interviews with experts on marital advice. Doris Marie Kanter, a native of

Norfolk, Va., was a 1949 graduate of Barnard College in New York. After studying on a Fulbright scholar- ship in Belgium, Mrs. Deakin moved to Washington, where she

lived for more than 40 years. Her husband of 51 years, James Deakin, a White House correspon- dent for the St. Louis Post-Dis- patch, died in 2007. Survivors include a son, David Deakin of Arlington, Mass.; a brother, Richard Kanter of Ellicott City; and two grandsons.

Thomas A. Baxter

Thomas A. Baxter, 63, a retired

Washington lawyer who special- ized in negotiating large contracts for technological outsourcing, died April 20 at Georgetown University Hospital. He had metastatic can- cer.

Mr. Baxter began his law career as a special assistant for litigation with the federal Price Commission in the early 1970s. In 1973, he joined the law firm now known as Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, where he worked on cases involving facility manage- ment and outsourcing. In once case, he led the team that advised J.P. Morgan Chase in a outsourcing transaction with IBM worth more than $5 billion. He retired in 2006. Thomas Allen Baxter, a native of

Decatur, Ind., was a 1968 graduate of Purdue University in Indiana. He was a 1971 graduate of the George Washington University Law School, where he also received amaster’s of law degree in 1977. He volunteered as an strategic adviser for the National Parks Con- servation Association. Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Mavis A. Walters of Washing- ton; three brothers; and a sister.

Gary H. Bearor, 54, who worked as a flooring installer for the past 26 years, died April 13 at his home in Grasonville, Md. He had compli- cations after a stem cell transplant to treat leukemia. Gary Herbert Bearor was born in

Prince George’s County and served in the U.S. Navy from 1977 to 1981. He enjoyed hunting and watch-

ing “Jeopardy!” and NASCAR rac- es.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Cynthia Overstreet Bearor of Grasonville; five children, Nicole Bearor of College Park, Gary C. Claire was born on April 9, 1919 in Wash- ington, DC to the late Jack and Marion Laake Preller. She later went on to marry the love of her life, George A. Boyland, until his death in 1976.

Of Takoma Park, MD., died peacefully the morning of March 23,2010 at Hillhaven Nursing and Rehab in Beltsville, Md. She was 87 years of age. Born Dolores Ethel Morganston to Ethel and Charles Morganston in The District on February 12, 1923, she was a ninth-generation Washingtonian who lived in the area nearly her entire life. She attended Roosevelt High School before graduating from George Washington University with a degree in Spanish Literature just after World War Two. After marrying her Marine sweetheart, Thomas Franklin Allen, they settled in Takoma Park whereTomworked for NASA and Dolores raised a family. Their marriage ended in divorce after 21 years. She did not remarry.

In her later years she became involved with Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, D.C., becoming a member of the Board of Directors and energetically supporting improvements to the facilities. She was also active in various local civic affairs and a generous supporter of pet rescue organizations. Towards the end of her life, ill health stole her mobility and she was no longer able to live at home.

She is predeceased by her parents, her former husband and one son, Charles B. Allen, and is survived by one son, Morgan Allen of Adamstown, MD, one daughter, Alice Rian Simon of Beltsville, MD and a nephew,Wesley Rian of Beltsville. Services will be held at The Glenwood Cemetery Chapel, 2219 Lincoln Road, N.E.,Washington, D.C. on Saturday, May 1 at 1 p.m. Interment will be immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to The Montgomery County Humane Society, 14645 Rothgeb Drive, Rockville, Md. 20850.

Claire was a homemaker and housewife all of her life. In her later years, she moved to the retirement community, Leisure World, in Silver Spring, Maryland, where she resided for 25 years. Two years ago she moved to High Point, NC where she resided at Pennyburn at Maryfield.

Claire is survived by her son, Drew Boy- land; sister, Sister Josetta Maria; grand- children Dena Maginnes-Jeffrey, Brad Boy- land, and Ryan Boyland; great-grandchil- dren, Jack Maginnes, Sophie Maginnes, Elliott Boyland, and Cooper Boyland.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 30, 2010 at the Historic St. John the Evangelist Church in Silver Spring, MD at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. Mary Sue Harvey, 80, of McClean, VA, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2010 at her residence. Born in Lynchburg, VA on November 15, 1929, she was a daughter of the late William Harvey and Frances Morrisette Harvey and was the wife of John H. Getreu.

Mrs. Harvey was a retired executive secretary with the US Navy Department and was a member of the Quaker Memorial Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by a daughter and a sister, Elizabeth Ann Harvey.

GEORGE FAY LITTLE (Age 84)

Passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010. George also known as “Bud,” leaves us with joyful memories and great stories. He was a loving and intelligent man who was devoted to his family and his country. George was a WWII Veteran and served on the USS Wasp. George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Laura, his sister Jean, and his daughter, Laura.

George is survived by his wife, Stella, daughter Nanci Little Gosnell and her hus- band Griff, son George and his wife Terri, grandchildren, Griff Gosnell, Callum Little and George Little Templeton, Stelsie and Michael Hodge.

Funeral Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 4150 Goodlett-Frank Road, Naples Florida 34103 on Wednes- day, April 28 at 11 AM, with a luncheon reception to follow at the church.
