GUIDE
Milwaukee Magazine has published its definitive guide to area doctors five times before: 1987, 1991, 1996,
2000 and 2004. To construct this year’s list, we did a random sampling of physicians and nurses in the five-county metro
area, yielding a list of 2,500 physicians and 2,500 nurses to whom we sent surveys. We asked them to nominate three
“Top” physicians in 33 different specialties. The number of times a particular doctor has made our list is indicated by
the number of stars: Zero stars means this is the doctor’s first time, while five stars indicates the doctor has made our
list each of the previous five times we’ve published it. The top choice of nurses is also indicated in each category, and
categories of specialists included for the first time are marked “new.” Finally, we screened our list to eliminate any doctors
who had complaints against them with the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing (drl.wi.gov).
