Enhancement Act of 2009

House of Representatives

t gives the Food and Drug Admin-
istration more power to deal with
food safety problems, but it also im-
poses a costly one-size-fits-all regula-
tory scheme on small farms and local
artisanal producers, the same as if
they were multinational corporations.
As it now stands, the bill threatens to
undermine organic farmers and others
producing for local markets, advises
the Organic Consumers Association,
and could easily put many small
farms out of business. OCA advocates:
“H.R. 2749 needs to draw a clear line
between small local growers and in-
dustrial/factory farms and processing
plants, where food-borne pathogens
incubate, flourish and spread.”
