heart of Mexico, perhaps often overlooked in favor of beach locations, is home to
six outstanding private country clubs with open door policies for foreign golfers.
Guadalajara, at an altitude of 5,000 feet and perfect weather, offers golfers
the opportunity to play city clubs, “the Riviera Country Clubs or Oak Hills
of Mexico” year round. Add friendly veteran caddies to the intimate country
club environment and you have a golf vacation or lifelong investment that can
rarely be matched.
Atlas Country Club,in Guadalajara, has one of the longest courses in the
country. It is host to several annual amateur tournament events.
El Cielo(formerly, El Palo-mar) is a spectacular, upscale course overlooking
Mexico’s second largest city, and a hit among local golfers. It has steadily devel-
oped on the surrounding hillside along with custom homes that afford vistas of
the city lights below. This golf course, high above Guadalajara, will be a source
of great satisfaction to visitors.
El Rio, on the outskirts of Guadalajara, is a new Jack Nicklaus Signature
designed course and a favorite of Lorena Ochoa, their Touring Professional. Jack
Nicklaus said, "It is the best piece of inland property in Mexico."
Las Lomas Club de Golf is an exclusive, 18-hole city golf club in a residential
community. Created by the US based JMP design team, it is a Par 71, 6950 yard
parkland style golf course with numerous sand bunkers, extensive colorful land-
scaping, and captivating water features throughout the setting. The putting
greens and tees planted with bent grass are in superb condition, while fairways
and roughs feature Salam Paspalum turf, a first for Mexico. There is more to
life in Guadalajara than Tequilaand Mariachis, although they are great as well.
Morelia, in the state of Michoacan, is a thriving town that has expanded greatly
from its historic central Zócolo. The rolling hillsides, fantastic weather, cultural
diversity, and warm and friendly people, have a welcome sign out for any and
all who want to come, play and invest.
Tres Marias Golf Club, set out to be the best residential golf course in the inte-
rior of Mexico, has a great start with 27 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signaturegolf,
varying from tame to intimidating. They have hosted several LPGA tour events
including some with Lorena Ochoaas well as the Mexican Open. Tres Marias
