cranes are also used for bulk handling.
Liebherr reports that in 2008 it deliv-
ered 51 cranes in 4-rope configuration,
of which 35 are for dedicated bulk han-
dling (34% of the 102 total), while six 2-
rope cranes are also being used mainly
for bulk handling. A stand-out feature of

Bigger and heavier
progress.
Another point of note is the continuing
trend towards bigger and heavier cranes.
This is a function of the increasing re-
quirement to handle heavy loads, such as
project cargoes (eg wind farms), and the
growing size of containerships. For ex-
ample, Liebherr shipped no less than 40
LHM 500s last year and three of the even
bigger type LHM 600.
In addition, the smallest models of
cranes face growing competition from
ropeless, hydraulic crane designs, derived
from excavator platforms. These are avail-
able from a growing number of suppliers
and can be supplied with crawler or rub-
ber-tyred platforms (and in one case at
least on rail-mounted portals, too) and
they can also be mounted on pontoons.
Price factors
The port crane market lacks transparency
when it comes to prices, so as usual there
is little to go on with regard to harbour
mobile crane prices. By way of example,
however, the Gottwald GHMK 6407
crane delivered to Tampa last autumn cost
US$4.6M including cif (it was shipped
part-big from Dusseldorf on board ONEGO
MERCHANT), local assembly, testing and
commissioning.
The crane is capable of handling
breakbulk, bulk, and project cargoes, as
well as containers and large dimension
pieces, such as yachts and other out-of-
gauge loads. Max. lift capacity is 120t and
it can work containers on/off a ship with
up to 17-wide deck stow.
The following comparison has been
made before in WorldCargo News (Octo-
ber 2008, p49), but it is worth repeating
in outline as the Port of Vancouver (WA)
has another LHM500S (max. 140t) on
order from Liebherr, for delivery this year,
so it will be interesting to compare again.
The port paid US$3.2M for its first
LHM500S, ordered in May 2006. Its near
neighbour, Longview (WA) - hence simi-
lar shipping costs - paid US$4.6M for its
crane, ordered in December 2007. This
is largely explained by currency factors
and changes in steel price. However, steel
prices have since fallen sharply.
The Longview and Washington cranes
are used to handle blades, nacelles and
other components for wind farms being
built in the PNW region. In addition,
Washington is handling massive pressure
vessels and draglines being imported for
the controversial oil sands developments
around Fort McMurray in Alberta.
Finally the delivered price of the
Reggiane MHC 130 (max. 100t) to
SerMI in Pozzallo, due to be consigned
before the end of this January, is under-
stood to be more than €2M.
