The causeway to the tidal island of Lindisfarne joins the mainland
at Beal and whilst you’re waiting for the tide to go out, pop into the

The Tudor watchtower on top of this strange volcanic rock was
transformed by Sir Edwin Lutyens into a comfortable Arts & Crafts
country house with gardens by Gertrude Jekyll. The conversion was
commissioned by Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life magazine.

ruins are mainly Medieval. The later Priory was destroyed by Henry VIII.
of which have a military theme. The first is ‘By Beat of Drum’ which
is a moving history of British infantrymen, whilst the second is the
regimental museum of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers (see also

Much of Berwick’s Medieval castle was demolished to make way for the
railway station and most of the stones were used to build the magnificent
Royal Border Bridge across the Tweed. Part of the castle’s curtain Wall
survives and still guards the aptly named Breakneck Stairs to the river.

Berwick’s Elizabethan ramparts are nearly complete in every Tudor
The magnificent Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the world’s great art
detail and there is a circular walking trail around the entire length of the
treasures, were written here circa 700AD and though the original is in the
revetments and early artillery emplacements.
