New Understanding Scientists have recently discovered something that surprised them. Tere are two species of quetzal instead of one. Tis diversity is good news. Yet it also means that each species is even more rare than previously thought. Every quetzal counts. Te quetzal is

legally protected in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama. Tese countries work hard to enforce the laws.

For example, Costa Rica has a system of

wildlife preserves and national parks. Tis system is supported by tourism. It helps protect quetzals. To best help the quetzals, people must

combine their efforts. Tey can help connect habitats. Tey can enforce penalties against those who harm the birds. With people's help, the replendent quetzal can continue to fly free in the highlands.
