depending upon which position you target. A common strategy is to initially develop one of each and then determine which format you prefer. While there are no set rules on how to organize a résumé, there are several approaches you can use. Social media is a tool that is widely used to promote your
skills and to network with colleagues and potential employers. A professional platform such as LinkedIn can put your profi le in front of recruiters. Many employers routinely scan online sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter to review poten- tial employees. As of April 2015, LinkedIn had more than 300 million members. Make sure your online profi le is professional and updated. Be sure to take advantage of the “Skills & Exper- tise” section on LinkedIn to highlight your abilities. Encourage peers to use the “Endorse” feature to give credibility to your skills. Provide a succinct, descriptive summary of your career on your social media sites. Making as many “connections” as possible will provide more visibility and more options for fi nding a new job.

How to build your résumé The key elements of any résumé are de- mographic information, education, work experience, professional skills and expertise, and relevant personal activities. Objectives and personal statements or summaries are no longer used — be concise and let your edu- cation and accomplishments speak for you. The fi rst section should contain demo-
graphics, such as name, address, telephone number(s) and e-mail address. You may choose to include a work phone number, but be sure a system is in place so you receive messages confi dentially. If your home answer- ing machine contains a personal message, make sure the greeting is not off ensive or po- tentially embarrassing. It’s equally important to ensure that the e-mail address you elect to use for work contacts is straightforward and professional. List education in the next category. Begin
with your most recent degree, highlighting any honors you have received. Include school names and the city and state where they are located. If you are enrolled in an advanced degree program, but have not yet graduat- ed, include that information by stating, for example, “Master of Science in Nursing, currently pursuing.” The next section of the résumé is an em-
ployment or work experience section. List this information in reverse chronological order, beginning with your most recent posi- tion. Important facts to record are employer name, city and state, job title, dates of em- ployment, and a brief description of your overall responsibilities, including specialty and leadership responsibilities.
