Senior Vice President & Chief Nurse Executive

“Our patients are

in good hands.” — Eileen P. Williamson, MSN, RN

APNs transforming care T

hroughout nursing’s history as the numbers in our ranks have grown, so too have our education, training, credentialing and skill sets. We’ve added continually to the variety of roles we’re able to play as nurses, the responsibilities we’re asked to take on, and the work settings in which we can practice. Over the years we’ve continued our education and pursued higher degrees; embarked on new career paths; and found new and important ways to make our voices heard in the seats we’ve assumed at the healthcare table. As a result, we’ve had a great impact on patient care and brought change to our profession and healthcare that is often described as transformational.

Nurse.com believes facts like these should be highlighted, and we did that in a special way this year in a series of stories on advanced practice nursing entitled, “APNs Transforming Care,” brought to you by the Johnson & Johnson &DPSDLJQ IRU 1XUVLQJ¶V )XWXUH :H SUR¿OHG QXUVHV LQ YDULRXV DGYDQFHG practice roles in four issues of Nurse.com print and online, and now we conclude the series with this downloadable e-book.

In its pages you will learn more about the APN role and its opportunities for advancement and get advice on how you can take your current nursing role to an APN role if you think that could be the next step on your nursing journey.

Advanced practice careers are not only meaningful in the scope and importance of the work APNs do, but they’re also moving in how these special nurses feel about what they do. The details of their roles, experiences and career achievements; the advanced education and training they’ve undertaken; and the competence and skills they’ve achieved are inspiring. No matter what role advanced practice nurses play or in what setting they work, SDWLHQWV EHQH¿W IURP WKHLU FDUH LQ FRXQWOHVV ZD\V

As you read through this e-book I think you’ll appreciate even more why last year as our nation’s nurse practitioners celebrated their 50th anniversary, U.S. News & World Report ranked the role as the second best overall job of the year. We hope you enjoy each page, and we invite you to look for the links we’ve included to all of this interesting APN information on our Nurse.com social media sites.

Just as we at Nurse.com are honored to feature advanced practice nursing in this e-book, Johnson & Johnson is very proud to be the sponsor of our APNs Transforming Care series. We are one in our belief that nurses deserve to be recognized publicly and celebrated for their professional achievements and the roles they play in the continued transformation of our nation’s healthcare — roles we know ensure patients every day that they truly are in good hands! •
