Upon successful graduation from your program, you will need to meet several requirements before seeking your first position. National certifi- cation will be required before applying for an APRN practice credential from the state board of nursing. The following resources can help:

• NP certification exams: – American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

– American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)

• Women’s Healthcare NP and neonatal NP: National Certification Corporation

• Pediatric NP: Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB: also through ANCC)

• Nurse anesthetist: National Board of Certification and Recertifi- cation for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA)

• Nurse-midwife: American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) • CNS: American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

Apply for privileges through the State Board of Nursing to practice in the state where you are seeking employment. Each state will have variations in requirements for practice. Information and applications will be available online. Review the requirements for gaining prescrib- ing privileges.

You will need to obtain a National Provider Identifier. An NPI is a unique identification number issued to healthcare providers, such as APRNs, by the CMS. The NPI is required to bill CMS for services rendered to patients. The NPI is also used by commercial healthcare insurers. For information, see The Who, What, When, Why & How of NPI: Information for Health Care Providers.

Some states permit NPs to prescribe controlled substances, which

will require an application through the Drug Enforcement Administra- tion registration. The DEA has the final authority and will issue you a registration to prescribe controlled substances once you complete all the requirements imposed by the state.

Looking Forward The road to becoming an APRN is challenging. The information provided in this module will start you on the path to the information you need to succeed. Take the time to reflect on this information and further review the web links and references to learn more about your specific journey.
