Transformational Leadership: A Growing Promise for Nursing Transformational leadership has been shown to be particularly effective in uncertain environments, such as those found in today’s healthcare organizations. The Magnet model emphasizes the importance of using a leadership style such as transformation- al leadership. Although not every organization will achieve Magnet status, nurses at all organizations can learn how to use the principles of transformational leadership to support a professional practice environment that results in outstanding patient care. This module explains what transformational leadership is, why transformational leadership is a key part of Magnet nursing organizations and how it can promote work satisfaction among nurses and improve care for patients.

Shared Governance: What It Can Mean for Nurses Shared governance is an organizational model that provides a structure for shared decision-making among professionals about practice and clinical outcomes. Shared governance legitimizes nurses’ decision-making control over their practice while extending their infl uence to some administrative areas previously controlled by man- agers. The popularity of shared governance is largely due to the rise of the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program’s acknowledgement that professionals need a professional structure to sustain professional behaviors and excellence in clinical outcomes. This module will enhance nurses’ and nurse leaders’ understanding of shared governance and how to implement a successful program.

Get Down to Business with a Business Plan A business plan is a blueprint of a business mission, goals and projections. It’s a written instrument to help guide the operation of a new business and a road map to tell others how one expects to reach projected goals. Typically, the term “busi- ness plan” is used when the new opportunity is outside an existing entity, such as a hospital, school or clinic. The term “business case” is used when the opportunity exists within a business or organization. The process followed to develop the plan in either situation is the same. In this module we will refer to both as a business plan. It provides nurses with the basic skills and tools needed to create a business plan or case for a needed service in an area of clinical responsibility.
