HE PANHANDLE PLAINS region, at fi rst glance, might look like a scene out of Western lore—a timeless expanse of
deep, river-cut gorges and grassy plains where pioneers and buff alo once roamed. More mod- ern trailblazers have also leſt their mark, from Lubbock rock ’n’ roll legend Buddy Holly to numerous art galleries in several cities. Route 66 passed through this northernmost reach of Texas, and visitors who trace the historic road can stop for a photo op at the famous Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo. Still, the star of the show is the grandeur of this region’s natural wonders, such as Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest in the nation. The rugged beauty of the Panhandle Plains is always wide open to enjoy but can never be tamed.
