700 species of birds in North America, 500 visit the Texas coast. Aransas Pass has three sites on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and the largest hummingbird garden in the state. Aransas Pass Community Park—A boardwalk and


observation platforms provide good bases to view water- birds in the marshes and ponds. Signs about the history of the site, ecology of the wetlands and wildlife species are posted. Find the best birding during the winter. Look for waterfowl, shorebirds and American oystercatchers; plus Sooty tern in the summer. Offers a marina, boat launch, fishing and kayaking. LIGHTHOUSE LAKES PADDLING TRAIL—A series of four loops range in length from 1.25 miles to 6.8 miles. The trails meander through seagrass flats and a black man- grove estuary, into sloughs and back lakes near the historic 1857 Lydia Ann Lighthouse on North Harbor Island.
