THE GREAT WAR — A CENTURY LATER
U.S. World War I Centennial Commission By Chris Isleib, Director of Public Affairs, WWI Centennial Commission
The U.S. World War I Centennial Commission was created by Congress to mark the role of our American veterans in the War, and in the peacetime rebuilding afterward. Roughly 4.7 million American men and women served in uniform during World War I, 2 million of them deployed overseas to fi ght. Sadly, 116,516 never made it home from the War. We are proud to tell their story. Our World War I community has steadily grown. We have developed education programs with the History Channel. We have helped plan World War I exhibits with Smithsonian museums. We have
put together World War I anniversary events, with a network of partner Centennial Com- mittees across the United States. We have also begun to design the new National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C. This memorial will stand in our Nation’s Capital with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the World War II Memorial, to honor our veter- ans who served in these great wars of the 20th century.
