Remarkable leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King and the Wright Brothers all changed the world through their actions and ideas, but how did they inspire others to follow their vision? James Rosebush, writing for the Business Insider, January
2015, said, “Dr. King’s leadership style represents the delivery of moral energy. His leadership style was a rise to a calling, embedded in Te Gospel.” As described in the book Lincoln on Leadership by Donald
Phillips, President Lincoln had a vision to reunite the nation and constantly communicated this aspirational vision to his cabinet, generals and others with whom he worked. He was persistent and showed his character through his daily actions. Lincoln realized that trust was an essential building block of
successful relationships and he knew he could not do it all. He enabled his leaders to be their “own man.” According to Gordon Leidner, author of Lincoln as a
Transformational Leader, “Great leaders have been studied for centuries, but it was not until the last century that scientists realized that productivity was a function of the mind as well as physical or organizational factors.” Studies therefore began to concentrate increasingly on
how people are psychologically motivated to perform. Similarly, consultant Simon Sinek, who advises the
military in his role at the RAND Corporation, claims that “people don’t buy what you do—they buy why you do it.” It’s grounded in biology, he says. “Te Wright Brothers were driven by a cause, a belief. If they could achieve powered
