Committing to Industry Education
The AFS Institute developed a new learning management system and introduced a new e-Learning and AFS library subscription package. On July 1, 2016, this new platform was launched with 20 modules of content in the topics of:
• Introduction to Metalcasting • Casting Defects • Cast Iron • Green Sand Molding.
The plan for the next fiscal year is to develop 45 new e-learning modules on varying topics. These short-format topics range from 15 to 60 minutes in length and can be taken in whatever order and whatever time the organization feels is appropriate to its training program. The modules are available a la carte or as part of the subscription program.
The e-learning modules supplement the Institute instructor- led classroom and in-plant courses. This past fiscal year, total enrollment was 888 students compared to 531 in fiscal year 2015. New courses held during the Wisconsin Regional and CastExpo accounted for an additional 250 students.
In fiscal year 2012-2013, the Institute made a $1 million commitment to fund the development of new courses. Since then, 28 classroom courses have been completely revamped.
CastExpo & Conferences
CastExpo16, which was held April 16-19, 2016, in Minneapolis, drew more than 6,100 attendees and a total of 456 exhibiting companies. This event introduced the Hub on the exhibit floor, where attendees could experience demonstrations in augmented reality and 3-D printing, hear short format presentations from corporate member exhibitors, meet up with others on themed topics or just relax and recharge. Keynote speakers each morning also was a successful addition to enhance the attendee experience. A third new aspect introduced this year were Institute short-format courses. Attendees has the opportunity to spend an afternoon experiencing four subjects offers as part of the new course curriculum. These new activities complemented the technical and management sessions, Hoyt Lecture and networking luncheons and banquets.
COURSE DEVELOPMENT This was the first year the Institute managed the development of content for classroom and e-learning courses. The efforts have resulted in the launch of 20 e-learning modules and 9 new classroom courses. In addition, the Institute, in conjunction with the AFS Information Technology staff, successfully configured, tested, and, on July 1, 2016, launched a new learning management system (LMS). The LMS is a cloud-based system used to host, track, report, and document electronic learning content.
