The machine uses a single driving mechanism to drive two heads, a belt grinder and a buffi ng wheel. The simple but effective concept uses the grinding belt to drive the buffi ng wheel, which is mounted at the opposite end of the same shaft as the belt’s contact wheel. The entire grinding mechanism is built on a swing frame that allows the operator to control the positioning and pressure of whichever grinding head is being used. It also lets the operator pivot the unit to change a belt when necessary. The machine’s control bar is adjustable to accommodate operators of different heights for better ergonomics. The G&P grinding unit is powered by a 15-hp (11-kW), 3600-rpm TEFC motor. Start/Stop push- buttons are located above the handlebars within easy reach of the operator. The 6 × 32" (152 × 3352-mm) abrasive belt is driven at a belt speed of approxi- mately 5500 fpm (1676 m/min) and is tensioned pneumati- cally. The right-side buffi ng wheel is driven by the grinding belt’s contact wheel shaft at approximately 6450 fpm (1996 m/min) wheel speed, based on a new 16" (406-mm) diam- eter wheel. A suspension bar supports the grinder/buffer for swing-frame grinding and polishing, and the swivel motion can be locked in place. To complete the machine, Lincoln Industries had a framework designed and built locally to suspend the grind- ing unit and position the part being polished. It includes a carriage that holds the part and travels it back and forth along its axis and a moveable beam that positions the grinding head being used over the part’s centerline. The swing frame unit’s handles incorporate safety switches that the operator must keep engaged while the machine is in operation. selects the fl ap wheel setting and the machine resets to the proper position and speed, after which the polishing process is repeated using the wheel.

select from a range of parameters, including tube diameter, bed and belt speeds and many other variables. When chang- ing from one head to another, the operator simply selects a setting for either belt or fl ap wheel on the control panel. A pneumatic cylinder then positions the appropriate G&P head over the workpiece and the controls set the variable-speed drive motor to the proper speed.


In operation, once a part is mounted in position, the belt is started and the travel cycle begins. At the end of the travel, the operator indexes the part and repeats the process, continuing around the part diameter in this manner. He then
