IF THE NCAA DOES NOT ADOPT THE PROPOSED LEGISLATION, THEN WHAT?
Joe Spallina: It’s going to be buyer beware. If the NCAA doesn’t come in and lay the law, I don’t think anything is going to change. Can I play a little devil’s advocate here? There’s an argument to be made that it makes the sport extremely unpredictable. Minus Maryland on the women’s side, on any day, anybody’s beating anyone, and everybody’s beating everyone. Some people may look at this in a warped way that this is good for the sport, because it’s created a tremendous amount of parity.
Ted Spencer: There needs to be more education at the youth level, talking to parents and youth programs and educating them on the process. Some are going to get recruited early, some are going to get recruited later and some are going to get recruited really late. But everybody’s got their own time, and it’s never too late.
Dom Starsia: Some relief at the NCAA level would be tremendous. That would make the most difference overall. Maybe I’m wrong, but I cannot see us filling up our classes with eighth-graders. I’m sure
Joe’s got kids that are going to be young men that we are very interested in, but I just cannot make myself bring an eighth-grader into my office. I think we’ve got the NCAA’s attention. That would be a big help to our sport overall, if the group at the top said we’re not going to talk to these kids until the start of their junior year. I think that would solve a lot of these issues.
