COLLIDING CAREERS


Taylor Cummings and Kayla Treanor have shadowed each other since they were freshmen. It’s time for one last ride as rivals.

T


he one year that got away from Maryland in its all-time series against Syracuse,


Taylor Cummings was still an Eagle.


She was leading IAAM power McDonogh (Md.) to its fourth conference championship in 2012 as the two-time Lacrosse Magazine National and Mid-Atlantic Player of the Year, while Kayla Treanor was finishing her senior year with Niskayuna (N.Y.) as her high school’s all- time leading scorer.


The duo watched from afar as the Orange defeated the then- No. 3 Terps 10-9 on their way to their first-ever appearance in the national championship. Once Cummings jumped onto the college scene, that one loss became a distant memory. During their collegiate careers, the Terps are 8-0 in


the series, having ended the Orange’s season in the final four the past three years. Syracuse fell to Maryland 15-12 in the 2014 NCAA championship game for the first of the Terps’ back-to-back NCAA titles. Yet both Cummings


and Treanor have lived up to their individual billings since being touted as top recruits four years ago. In their eight collegiate meetings, they’ve posted similar offensive numbers, while Cummings has earned an edge on the draw, which is reflective of their positions. For the past three years, Treanor has played attack, while Cummings became known for her play in the midfield. “Both of them are great at what they do,” Reese said. “You look at Treanor, and she’s
